i've been on this strange poetry kick lately. i've never really liked poetry before. it always seemed so pretentious to me. but i'm starting to feel it. i really dug the spoken word benefit on saturday night, esp bao phi. "reverse racism" blew me away! then today i got to see nikki giovanni, which i totally loved. she was so great. man. poetry. who knew?
some tunes on heavy rotation in lisaland:
-"hallelujah," jeff buckley - this song will be played at my funeral. until then, it's the first song i listen to every day.
-"mind sex," dead prez - i'm ready to get some.
-"girls not grey," afi - punk is back! i don't know what that means.
-"like a stone," audioslave - dude, this video makes them all look so goddamn sexy. wifebeater and tatoos, that's all i'm gonna say.
-"police and thieves," the clash - i'm on a big clash kick right now. anyone else annoyed that there were no british singers in that clash tribute on the grammys? they just didn't do the song justice.
-"all the things she said," tatu - number one song in england, i think they're playing the video on mtv too.
-"behind the music" (entire album), the soundtrack of our lives - pretty good! swedes impersonating the beatles.

my friend bethany and i randomly send each other choice anecdotes/IM converations/quotes/emails from our summer interning together at asianavenue.com. here was a LOLer from her--
"i must've forwarded this to myself when i wrote this a couple summers ago because it was so ridiculous. read it and laugh :)
my boss ims me a list of things to find for the movie. among them is the "run studio." what the hec is that, i ask my friend lisa. she doesn't know. i ask the other intern, sam. he doesn't know. so i im my boss back (which is silly cause he sits right behind me but whatever we all use it for work..haha) to ask him what a run studio is and he proceeds to explain what it is. i read what he writes and i'm still not completely sure but i im him a couple studios, hoping they're the right ones. so keep in mind he has explained what a "run studio" is. next i turn around cause he has a question about the review and then i ask him which credits he wanted cause he wasn't clear. so he goes to this website and says, "it's these two things." well he pointed out the exact same studios i imed him for the "run studio." so then i say, "well then what's the run studio." and he looks at me confused and says, "run studio? there's no such thing as a run studio." and i say, "but
you just asked me to find it." (not to mention that he also explained what it was) he says, "i did?" i say, "ya look at the im conversation." he looks and says, "oh." he is on crack."

so i was sitting in my excrutiatingly boring but mandatory ethnic studies class today, and i glanced out the window briefly to look at a guy walking by (some things never change). all of a sudden i imagined myself climbing out the window without anyone noticing, you know, real subtle-like. and then i thought of diving out the window, cuz that might be faster and less likely to draw attention. then i thought of morphing myself into a gelatinous liquid and sort of sliding out the window, which would be the quietest.
i've been thinking like that a lot lately -- sort of like woody allen-type ridiculous situations. for example: i had a dream last night that my friend ivan was talking to me about this guy that i am/was interested in except that i didn't think he knew him (and i don't think he knows him in real life....DOES HE?!?), and i thought he was referring to this other guy i was interested in during my senior year of high school, who also happens to have the same name. let's say the name is mmmbruce, which it's not, even though i did have a thing for a guy named bruce, but that was not senior year of high school, that was sophomore year college, and besides this fictitious name is mmmbruce anyways.
anyways, so in the dream ivan goes, "oh yea, so leese, you should stop by the party tonight" (which, i swear, he is always saying to me because i always see him around rush time and he always invites me to those parties, which aren't so bad really, i mean, is dancing on window ledges ever bad?, but the guys are so spikeyhairbaggypantsblackshirtredfaced and the chance they'll talk to you is like 1 in 10,000 because they are, after all, ASIAN). so i go "oh yea um maybe" and ivan goes, "well mmmbruce is gonna be there." and i assume he's talking about the mmmbruce i had a crush on in high school, so i'm like "uhh ok whatever" and then ivan looks me in the eye and goes "no, leese, mmmbruce is gonna be there," obviously indicating the current mmmbruce. and then ivan proceeds to give me the background on the current mmmbruce -- like oh he used to run track in high school, and he was really good, and he still runs every now and then, which is why i see him around the gym sometimes (it all made sense in the dream, see). i woke up all excited cuz i knew a little bit more dirt on mmmbruce and almost went to the track to look for him but i realized that it was just a dream.
so the woody allen-esque part comes in here -- i was talking to freesia tonight about another guy who i've stumbled upon who fits the current bill (dark-rimmed glasses, artsy type) and also has the same frakin name -- mmmbruce. and i said wouldn't it be funny if i had a dream where all the mmmbruces were in it and i'm talking to the one mmmbruce about anouther mmmbruce but i think he's referring to the high school mmmbruce, who has to make a cameo and be all "hey lisa" so i can say "NO, NOT YOU! i liked you in like high school and i was so over it like hella fast!" and all the mmmbruces are everywhere and causing much chaos in the life of lisa.
you know, just like in real life.

Let the record show that on Monday, February 17th, 2003, at 12:31 AM, Lisa lost all her moral integrity and started a blog. This came from reading others' blogs and realizing that any monkey with a keyboard can do this. So I should be fine...
Freesia told me to start mine here on blogger instead of on xanga because it is, in her words, "too trendy," and whilst I have never been opposed to things that are "too trendy," I trust Freesia in all things that are not concerning boys, clothes, music, life mottos, morals, etc. (HA!)
I see all of you out there salivating in anticipation for a brief glimpse into my life, so I won't keep you waiting any longer:
Friday was a good going-out night -- I was ready to hit some bars with my, in Kimi's words, "get it girl" outfit coupled with my "can't have it" attitude (she later pointed out that I always have this attitude, which is true). Valentine's Day isn't a huge deal for me -- sometimes I have a Valentine, sometimes not, and I know it's really nothing to cry or swoon about. Kimi had just gotten into a mega relationship-ending spat with her ex, so I picked her up all the way across town and came all the way back over here to meet up with Anne and Daisy at a bar called 26 mix, at Mission and 26th St. My sister said she'd heard some good things about it, and we were willing to check it out. It was pretty cool inside -- nicely decorated (Valentine's Day theme, of course) and I enjoyed lounging on the swanky velvet banquette. There were also Hershey's kisses on the tables (score!) and the Cosmos were excellent. It was all very Sex in the City, except that the people on the dancefloor were horrible dancers (I felt like I was back in England), and the crowd was mainly older and White. The DJ was very very good -- "OPP," "Let's Talk About Sex," and even my new guilty pleasure, "In Da Club." I'd heartily recommend this bar, but only on nights when the crowd is a little better.
We decided to try our luck elsewhere, and moved on to Haight Street to check out the new club there called Milk. It was 12:45 am by the time we got there, but the cover was still $10! The place looked pretty cool inside, and there was a cool crowd standing outside too. Hopefully I'll get to check this place out later with my Haight Street hos (you know who you are).
So we walked over to our Ol' Reliable, Hobson's Choice aka Victorian Punch Bar aka Tart with alcohol. That was pretty fun. As we drove home, Kimi and I couldn't help but wonder -- where are all the college kids?!?!?! Because they are obviously NOT at the bars. We deduced that most of the college kids are at the clubs, and we resolved to hit those up next weekend. I cringe at the idea of clubs, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
I talked to my sister later that night and she made the astute point that all the guys that we would want to meet aren't at any bar or club anyways -- they're at home, chillin. Which is probably true. But what does this say about us girls who go out to bars and clubs? And how do we get at these home dwellers anyways?
More answers next week, hopefully.
