going through the archives for a little bit of nostalgia, and found this post from dec. 2003 - still so, so amazingly put.
click, you will not be sorry: Can men become attracted to women who aren't their physical ideal?

spotted in toilet stall wall today: "Don't worry: you're 'approachable cute.'"

i have fer sure been guilty of some or many of these blog cliches, but the one that totally gets my goat and that i STILL see around A LOT is this one:

i have fer sure been guilty of some or many of these blog cliches, but the one that totally gets my goat and that i STILL see around A LOT is this one:
[purposefully non-ghetto statement], yo.
Often used in conjunction other ghetto nonfabulous phrases like "Oh snap!" and "The [object or situation] was mad [obscure adjective]," the ubiquitous "yo" is a red flag of caucasianness, or at least non-blackness, or certainly anti-hipness. See also "haterade," "shizzle," and so on. One waves the flag to signal and suborn the anti-cool nature of the associated prose, but these days, "yo" and its ghetto-term relations sound tired even when uttered by actual ghetto residents.

who else say last week's ep of the office about the asian benihana waitresses? i need to ponder it a little bit longer - i think it was funny, BUT also pretty racy in terms of doing an extended racial joke that many people still find offensive - would they do a similar joke re: blacks? and even if so, does that make it ok? i think anything that provokes discussion or thoughts about race is basically good, BUT there was something about this that made me uncomfortable, not sure exactly what yet. maybe cuz it felt like the show was saying "haha, isn't that funny," instead of "isn't that fucked up?" (which it does indeed do with other jokes, eg oscar being gay, the black guy having been in jail) - maybe i wasn't paying attention at the end, but i don't remember the asian girls having a chance at the end to tell michael off for being a jerk? so there wasn't that sense of showing it was wrong? just some thoughts.

also, if you are going to go to the new hott bar in sf on the weekend that you are sure to see every person from high school back for christmas, and you are with five dudes, and you see two girls behind you in line that you went to high school with, and you ask them to go in front of you in line so that you can pretend to be with them so you can get in (without telling them this, of course) - at least have the decency to buy them a drink for getting you in! skeezy bastard!
but otherwise, slide is pretty nice - it totally reminded me of dream (dc 2k3), tho biff thinks it feels like l.a. - even the water guys are cute. rye is also a new favorite from the people behind old favorites rosewood and 15 romolo (kimi: ROMOLO!!!)

BERET AND TOGGLES

asian am hipster xmas 2k6 last night aka clement pub crawl - we started out the rainy evening at poleng's happy hour, where they have delicious 25 cent crispy adobo chicken wings (we consumed 40 between the five of us) and $2 well drinks. alex amazed us all by managing to only use two napkins for all his wings - feat of madness! we called mike a liar for barfing in the middle of the afternoon and then denying it, robot scared off three people by putting her jacket on mike's empty seat. robot then tried to pawn stuff from her ex off onto us at papalote, but we resisted! and learned that in sf, men don't wear scarf + gloves - it's either one or the other.
went back to steve's pad for a pick-us-up (crossfade + hobnobs + coffee). the original plan was to go to a new bar on haight, but, even tho the chicks outnumbered the dudes, the dudes co-opted the plan and replaced it with GENKI (shocker). we went to rockit room first, where we learned that on thursdays rockit becomes basically a college bar - white frat dudes, white girls in zebra print halter dresses, group of geeky asian dudes playing foosball way too seriously. what the hades?!? also robot was in line for the bathroom for seriously 20 minutes, and philana gave the bartender so much sass with her car bomb order that he could no longer look her in the eye.
we left and went to 540 club down clement, where dear lord it was packed! who knew clement was so HOTT on thursdays? i shot down a guy hella fast, and my work for the evening was done.
i woke up this morning and found on the coffee table, in alex's writing: "I went too, but I didn't bring my light saber."
---
i've been trying to upload rilo kiley's "xmas cake" for three days now, but for some reason it's not happening on xanga audio. so, fuck it, that song is so 2004 anyways.

a short meditation on coffee cups
why is it that in sf there is no way to carry a coffee cup in the street and not look bougie? i suspect it is because all cups are either red (starbucks) or white (peets), or some variation of those. in new york, there are those blue and white 'have a nice day' cups that you get for 50 cents on the corner (75 cents near subway stations) or the white/pink/orange dunkin donuts ones that you always see on the ground, so you can carry a coffee cup and not feel like a prat (british slang returns!!). there, you could just be rushing somewhere trying to get some caffeine (or more accurately, tons of sugar). but in sf, it's a luxury item that signals you are on a break. you have no choice - you MUST drink your coffee with your leather TA schoolbag from london, kate spade sunglasses, and marc jacobs pear necklace-watch in your VW golf. you simply must!

TWO NEW THEORIES ON ASIAN AM. MEN
Q: Why are Asian Am. macktivists bad in bed?
A: Because they don't have as much experience in that area. People who have had just one or two partners can't have that great technique. Sorry, guys. Also, the girls they know are likely not trying to hook up, but trying to fight the power. A downward spiral.
Q: For Asian Am. girls who date mainly non-Asian men, why is it that when they finally try to date an Asian Am. guy, it turns out really bad?
A: Two theories on this one - 1) they have lower standards for Asian Am. men as a result of not having dated many and knowing the market. 2) They're just trying to date any ol' Asian Am. guy so they can tell APA feminist bitches like me that they have so dated an Asian Am. guy. Like racial dating bingo.

i don't know how to say this. one day, i woke up and i saw a part of myself i had never seen before. you can think of it as a third eye, a third arm, a patch of bright green skin, a furry tail. it was new, it was strange, it was unknown, unexplored. i thought, i want to tell my good friends about this. then i noticed, they were all gone. i was filled with sadness and regret and longing. i thought, i must tell my family about this. but they were gone as well. i missed them, and i remembered all the warm times, and the times they cared for me when i needed them. and i spited myself for all those times when i was too selfish to care for them when they needed me, to do small but loving things for them when they so obviously were reaching out to me, in their soft, noninvasive way, the way they did it that i knew and recognized. i thought of my parents, who i know so well, who i know by the sounds of their footsteps on the hallway and how they close the bathroom door, and how i could not tell them this. but i bit my lip and said, i must explore this new part on my own. it is what must be done, and i must do this alone because i am alone.
so i went. i was afraid. but i knew i would not be hurt, i knew i would be safe. it took weeks to explore, but i was thorough and careful. i took notes, drew a map and kept careful files. i said, i must bring order to this place where there is no order. we fear only what we do not know, so i must know this thing, this place. when i was younger, i looked to others to help me think through my problems, to get a general opinion on matters. now i did not need others to do this. i was very proud of myself.
but i was still scared. so i began to speak. i learned to say words i had never said before, words that sounded strange and harsh, and words that meant things i did not want them to mean. i spoke, but then i began to think, am i speaking too much? does this make others uncomfortable? it seemed to. they brought their own interpretations and expectations to my words, and i did not like that. it was as if all along i had been saying "AAAA" and one day i said "ABAA?," and the world stared at me confused, and said, what? oh no. no, you meant "AAAA." so i just went back to saying "AAAA." i stuck to the script. i became very small and unintrusive, so others would tell me about their lives, and i would ask appropriate questions at appropriate times and with appropriate inflections and facial movements. and i think they forgot i ever said "ABAA," or maybe they wanted to forget i said it, or maybe they thought that is what i wanted. i became awash with other people's concerns and lives, and i thought, this is right, this is appropriate. i went back and explored my new space by myself again.
i thought about god, briefly, and what it meant that he had given me this new part, or if i even believed he had done so. was it a test, was it a sign, was it part of his plan? i realized it was best that i was a lone explorer there, because it was part of me, and it was something that no one else could ever experience in the exact way. so it must be done alone, ultimately.
i was not wholly alone. one day i looked down and there was a hand there, in mine. and i appreciated it, and i loved it. but i looked at it, and i saw it was afraid too, and it knew less about my territory than i. so in the daytime i explored alone, and at night, i came back and it fed me sausages and cheeseburgers and root beer, and spaghetti-os, if i asked for them. and i was happy, because i knew i needed this nourishment in order to have the strength for the next day's explorations. but i knew these expeditions would always be alone.
it is not so easy to be brave. to explore new parts of yourself alone. to say words you have never said before that mean things you don't want them to mean. but it just must be done.

at the hyphen party on friday, there was a pretty rockin' local apa-fronted band called lovelikefire - check them out, they are good!
---
so some of you may know of my enthusiasm for asian tv channels, by which i mean AZN and Imaginasian - a lot of the programming is actually entertaining or thought-provoking.
one of my new favorite shows is 'party guide for an urbanite' on Imaginasian - it's an asian american queer eye - BRILLIANT.
the other two shows i recommend on AZN TV are asian street comedy (best of edition), which is apa sketch and stand-up comedy, and ivy dreams, a reality show about asian am high schoolers who want to get into the ivies (RIVETING).

FUN WITH CHAI AT MR. SMITH'S
last night was the most surreal chai night ever - first, she could not stop bopping along in her seat. this means doing the fists-chugging movements to every song. steve began to do the exact same move, and it was very odd.
second, she called another girl a FOB. i laughed out loud that CHAI called SOMEONE ELSE a FOB. but she said, "it takes one to know one."
third, chai recommended the new gwen stefani song to me, saying it was quite danceable. CHAI RECOMMENDED THE NEW GWEN STEFANI SONG.
finally, alex and mike's theatre group performed, and afterwards, while chatting with alex, i heard this exchange:
chai: "so, had you licked mike before during practice?"
alex: "no, only tonight when i got into character."
chai: "and the cum? what did it taste like?"
alex: "oh, that was yogurt."
chai: "ah, but was it salty?"
at which point i screamed, covered my face, and ran away, screaming, "WAY MORE THAN I EVER NEEDED TO KNOW ABOUT CHAI!!!!"
(for the record, chai insists she asked about the salty-ness because of mike's sweat.)
one other thing i learned about chai - she is coooollllddd-blooooded. her friend was totally stuck talking to this weirdo dude, and chai refused to bail her out even though she knew her friend was uncomfortable!
it was quite a traumatizing night for all, with the sight of alex's bare chest, alex whipping mike, mike simulating copulation on alex (with happy ending), and alex licking fake cum off mike's face. i will post pics when i get them. i think jericho summed it up best after seeing that sketch: "man, moss men is over."

new part-time job - i'm managing interns and doing some editing...also have a few freelance writing gigs going on. it's good to be back in the field i want to be in. sadly, i won't be able to fulfill the dream of living completely on unemployment (tho it did treat me and steve to dinner last friday).
saturday we had a yummy brunch with rtfm at the pork store cafe - i had the chorizo omlette, which was good but kind of intense, and i only ate half. it was super nice out, yet steve and i had nothing to do, so we rented roller blades next to the in n out in fisherman's wharf and skated down the embarcadero. i only fell once! but my ass still hurts like hell. after skating, we had delissssssshis chicken wings at hooters (per margot's recommendation). i don't think steve looked at me once while we were in there. our server was named autumn and i don't know if that was her real name. also, did you know they wear nude stockings?!
saturday night we went to medjool, and it was a gorgeous night. the rooftop bar is always obscenely crowded, so the trick is - get (a few) drinks at the bar on the ground floor, then bring them to the roof. yes, it's four flights up, but so worth it. medjool is such an odd bar - it's like the marina transplanted to the mission. lots of good looking white and asian folk, young, well-dressed. there is also a cheap garage on 21st street, so no worrying about parking. i think this is veering into yelp territory, so i will move on. we ended the night with some cross-fade action and NIZARIOS. YUM. i was thinking about margot and the genesis of the cross-fade. MARGOT COME BACK TO US.
sunday laur and i went to the capsule sf fair in hayes valley, where i bought some overpriced accessories, and overheard a euro-ish guy say: 'this is SO hayes valley.' which it was indeed.

Why Aren't We Shocked?
The New York Times
October 16, 2006
By Bob Herbert, Op-Ed Columnist
"Who needs a brain when you have these?"
- message on an Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirt for young women
In the recent shootings at an Amish schoolhouse in rural Pennsylvania
and a large public high school in Colorado, the killers went out of
their way to separate the girls from the boys, and then deliberately
attacked only the girls.
Ten girls were shot and five killed at the Amish school. One girl was
killed and a number of others were molested in the Colorado attack.
In the widespread coverage that followed these crimes, very little was
made of the fact that only girls were targeted. Imagine if a gunman
had gone into a school, separated the kids up on the basis of race or
religion, and then shot only the black kids. Or only the white kids.
Or only the Jews.
There would have been thunderous outrage. The country would have first
recoiled in horror, and then mobilized in an effort to eradicate that
kind of murderous bigotry. There would have been calls for action and
reflection. And the attack would have been seen for what it really
was: a hate crime.
None of that occurred because these were just girls, and we have
become so accustomed to living in a society saturated with misogyny
that violence against females is more or less to be expected. Stories
about the rape, murder and mutilation of women and girls are staples
of the news, as familiar to us as weather forecasts. The startling
aspect of the Pennsylvania attack was that this terrible thing
happened at a school in Amish country, not that it happened to girls.
The disrespectful, degrading, contemptuous treatment of women is so
pervasive and so mainstream that it has just about lost its ability to
shock. Guys at sporting events and other public venues have shown no
qualms about raising an insistent chant to nearby women to show their
breasts. An ad for a major long-distance telephone carrier shows three
apparently naked women holding a billing statement from a competitor.
The text asks, "When was the last time you got screwed?"
An ad for Clinique moisturizing lotion shows a woman's face with the
lotion spattered across it to simulate the climactic shot of a porn
video.
We have a problem. Staggering amounts of violence are unleashed on
women every day, and there is no escaping the fact that in the most
sensational stories, large segments of the population are titillated
by that violence. We've been watching the sexualized image of the
murdered 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey for 10 years. JonBenet is dead.
Her mother is dead. And we're still watching the video of this poor
child prancing in lipstick and high heels.
What have we learned since then? That there's big money to be made
from thongs, spandex tops and sexy makeovers for little girls. In a
misogynistic culture, it's never too early to drill into the minds of
girls that what really matters is their appearance and their ability
to please men sexually.
A girl or woman is sexually assaulted every couple of minutes or so in
the U.S. The number of seriously battered wives and girlfriends is far
beyond the ability of any agency to count. We're all implicated in
this carnage because the relentless violence against women and girls
is linked at its core to the wider society's casual willingness to
dehumanize women and girls, to see them first and foremost as sexual
vessels - objects - and never, ever as the equals of men.
"Once you dehumanize somebody, everything is possible," said Taina
Bien-Aimé, executive director of the women's advocacy group Equality
Now.
That was never clearer than in some of the extreme forms of
pornography that have spread like nuclear waste across mainstream
America. Forget the embarrassed, inhibited raincoat crowd of the old
days. Now Mr. Solid Citizen can come home, log on to this $7 billion
mega-industry and get his kicks watching real women being beaten and
sexually assaulted on Web sites with names like "Ravished Bride" and
"Rough Sex - Where Whores Get Owned."
Then, of course, there's gangsta rap, and the video games where the
players themselves get to maul and molest women, the rise of pimp
culture (the Academy Award-winning song this year was "It's Hard Out
Here for a Pimp"), and on and on.
You're deluded if you think this is all about fun and games. It's all
part of a devastating continuum of misogyny that at its farthest
extreme touches down in places like the one-room Amish schoolhouse in
normally quiet Nickel Mines, Pa.

COME OVER HERE BABE TALK IN THE MIC
there is a campaign to reclaim the word 'misshapes' and bring it back to its original owners, the 90s british indie rock band pulp. i am totally in support of this. since you can hear 'misshapes' at the above link, i present one of my favorite pulp tunes in solidarity:

this cnn 'how indie art thou?' quiz reminds me of 'are you down?' -
here's my score:
You got 6 out of 10 correct on your first attempt.
Moderately down: You can certainly hang, but can you hang with the best of them? Not quite yet. Keep doing what you're doing, though, and soon you'll be quoting obscure movie and song lyrics in everyday life like it's going out of style.

"So what are you saying?"
"I'm not saying sex is our divinity. Please. Only that sex is the one secret we have that approximates an exalted state and that we share, two people share wordlessly more or less and equally more or less, and this makes it powerful and mysterious and worth sheltering."
"Don't take it into the open, you're saying. But this is because you're still the same romantic person, probably, you were at twenty. Sex is not so secret anymore. The secret is out. You know what sex means to most people?...Sex is what you can get. For some people, most people, it's the most important thing they can get without being born rich or smart or stealing. This is what life can give you that's equal to others or better, even, that you don't have to go to college six years to get. And it's not religion and it's not science but you can explore it and learn things about yourself."

WITH CHERRY THE GHETTONESS NEVER ENDS
cherry and i have this running joke that every time we go out together, it's mad ghetto. examples: PT bar on geary (which requires no explanation of its ghettoness); drinking bacardi from the bottle in my car before going to what used to be social club; all-you-can-drink beer nights after which cherry has to apologize to tall blonde guys for grinding on them too much on the dancefloor the night before, to which they will reply, 'no problem!' [does anyone else remember the hilarity of this??]
it's just who we are; it's how we roll.
last night, of course, was no different. it involved: cherry explaining effects of the feminization of labor; alpha bar (again, requires no explanation); talking to (for way. too. long.) guys who worked for immigration detecting terrorists at sfo; me falling off the curb (cherry laughing, as everyone does); a 20 minute debate on whether a guy was white (says me) or mexican (cherry wishes); spam, curry fish balls, and paying $1 for the smallest cup of water i've ever seen; crashing at steve's empty apt; looking hella rough the next morning, and scaring white mothers and their children (not the british children! - for rj) on arguello.
this, however, is the scene that will always stay with me:
ME (in cherry's ear, after giving her the 'let's go' eyebrows for a while, then kicking her under the bar for half an hour, then getting up to go to the bathroom to call steve for ten minutes): 'Are you ready to go?'
CHERRY: 'How about a few more minutes?'
ME: 'What?'
CHERRY: 'A few more minutes?'
ME: 'Excuse me?'
CHERRY: 'I could stay a little longer.'
ME: 'UM....I'M READY TO GO NOW.'
CHERRY: 'OK, just hold on a second [while I give this guy who has his hand on my butt my number].'
NEXT MORNING -
CHERRY: 'Ms. Lis, you have to tell me how to change my voicemail so it doesn't say my full name.'
ME: 'Did you give him your full name?'
CHERRY: 'Yes, but I don't want him to know it's my real name.'
ME: '.............'
---
dudes, this xanga audio thing is kind of rad. here is a keane cover by lily allen for you to gnaw on:

NB: I've added new pics to this post the past two posts before this - check em out
JANE FONDA'S DOG LICKED MY LEG AND I LIKED IT

while i may (and do) bitch about work, i am always impressed by the guests who come to speak here. monday i saw times conservative columnist david brooks; today it was first wave feminist power duo gloria ('g-lo?') steinem and jane fonda. and it was PACKED. i had to watch the CCTV broadcast in another room downstairs. popped into the bathroom before the show and almost stepped on a cute little dog sans leash. what the hell, i thought - these güglers and their sense of entitlement! the nerve, bringing a dog into the BATHROOM - was it not ok to leave the dog at ones desk for three minutes? but the dog was well-behaved, standing silently and faithfully outside its owner's stall, and whenever it would peek under the stall, the owner cooed at it, 'hello, baby! hello!'
sick, thought i. SICK.
i came out and while i was washing my hands, i felt something lick my calf. i looked down and saw the offender. grey is in this season, i thought, and i have been looking for a nice little stole. CATCH THOSE PUPPIES!

NB: this image also came up when i searched 'cruella de ville' -

sad, but not untrue
later during the talk, schmidtty (who is increasingly reminding me of a cross between the doozers on fraggle rock and beaker from the muppets

+

=

?)
mentions how jane fonda (who was looking a little robert evans for the wear - look how hot she used to be!) has brought her little dog tulea with her on stage. and, like a true diva, she brought the dog along even though she was not even aware of our dog friendly campus. also apparently she brings the dog EVERYWHERE - santa barbara, san francisco, atlanta, palm beach, FL; lexington, KY.

anyways, the talk was very first wave - equality for women in politics, workplace, home. blah blah blah. the only time they mention women of color is when they talk about women in 'the global south' (how chic) - what about the women of color in your own country? plus they always talk about how this generation lacks the anger of their generation, and that always makes me SO. MAD. it didn't make things any better that there were no young feminsts there to refute that opinion - in fact at least one young woman came to the mic who admitted to being detached from feminism (i think one was crying because her mom had been so much more passionate about feminism than she was) and went on to speak as if that was the status quo among young women.
far from it, my friend.
here are some pics:

just another typical night at the elbo room, in our usual corner (the one with the video game machine tables) - but alas, what is this?
three different couples making out like crazy! and that was just in our little corner. including one asian guy who was certainly NOT cute enough to get that much tongue action or STRADDLED (ignore earlier post about asian guys deserving more ass). these three brazen couples seemed totally unawares of our group of ten people staring and pointing at them in disgust. WHEN DID IT BECOME OK TO MAKE OUT AT THE ELBO ROOM?!??!
***PHOTOS HERE (the couple behind us didn't come out though...)

what a gorgeous weekend. every weekend, i say 'this is probably the last nice weekend of this year,' but this time i really mean it. how many 75 degree days does sf have left in it? not many. time to shake out the sweaters...or steal steve's as the case may be. i'm all about boyfriend clothes for fall.
speaking of, i've been looking for a caramel colored slouchy leather bag for fall, and every time i come across something labeled a 'hobo bag,' i think of steve, who saw one named such a few weeks ago and said, 'that's not nice.' ahh, yes, standing up for homeless everywhere against the brutes of fashion!
--
so out with biff the other night, and i pointed out a white guy who i thought was cute. i asked biff (who is white-ish) whether i had bad taste in white men. she said she thought he was gay, but also that he looked asian-ish. WHAT? how can a white man look asian? she says that she thinks asian men have 'finer features' than white men. i said that's probably cuz they don't grow facial hair. interesting, i have never heard a white woman's opinions of asian men - steve wants me to find out more so he can post tips on the internet.

also, don't worry, drunken wedding pics of me are forthcoming - i got a preview last night, sheesh
