new part-time job - i'm managing interns and doing some editing...also have a few freelance writing gigs going on. it's good to be back in the field i want to be in. sadly, i won't be able to fulfill the dream of living completely on unemployment (tho it did treat me and steve to dinner last friday).

saturday we had a yummy brunch with rtfm at the pork store cafe - i had the chorizo omlette, which was good but kind of intense, and i only ate half. it was super nice out, yet steve and i had nothing to do, so we rented roller blades next to the in n out in fisherman's wharf and skated down the embarcadero. i only fell once! but my ass still hurts like hell. after skating, we had delissssssshis chicken wings at hooters (per margot's recommendation). i don't think steve looked at me once while we were in there. our server was named autumn and i don't know if that was her real name. also, did you know they wear nude stockings?!

saturday night we went to medjool, and it was a gorgeous night. the rooftop bar is always obscenely crowded, so the trick is - get (a few) drinks at the bar on the ground floor, then bring them to the roof. yes, it's four flights up, but so worth it. medjool is such an odd bar - it's like the marina transplanted to the mission. lots of good looking white and asian folk, young, well-dressed. there is also a cheap garage on 21st street, so no worrying about parking. i think this is veering into yelp territory, so i will move on. we ended the night with some cross-fade action and NIZARIOS. YUM. i was thinking about margot and the genesis of the cross-fade. MARGOT COME BACK TO US.

sunday laur and i went to the capsule sf fair in hayes valley, where i bought some overpriced accessories, and overheard a euro-ish guy say: 'this is SO hayes valley.' which it was indeed.

a story i wrote got cited on wikipedia as a reference!!!
Why Aren't We Shocked?

The New York Times
October 16, 2006
By Bob Herbert, Op-Ed Columnist

"Who needs a brain when you have these?"
- message on an Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirt for young women

In the recent shootings at an Amish schoolhouse in rural Pennsylvania
and a large public high school in Colorado, the killers went out of
their way to separate the girls from the boys, and then deliberately
attacked only the girls.

Ten girls were shot and five killed at the Amish school. One girl was
killed and a number of others were molested in the Colorado attack.

In the widespread coverage that followed these crimes, very little was
made of the fact that only girls were targeted. Imagine if a gunman
had gone into a school, separated the kids up on the basis of race or
religion, and then shot only the black kids. Or only the white kids.
Or only the Jews.

There would have been thunderous outrage. The country would have first
recoiled in horror, and then mobilized in an effort to eradicate that
kind of murderous bigotry. There would have been calls for action and
reflection. And the attack would have been seen for what it really
was: a hate crime.

None of that occurred because these were just girls, and we have
become so accustomed to living in a society saturated with misogyny
that violence against females is more or less to be expected. Stories
about the rape, murder and mutilation of women and girls are staples
of the news, as familiar to us as weather forecasts. The startling
aspect of the Pennsylvania attack was that this terrible thing
happened at a school in Amish country, not that it happened to girls.

The disrespectful, degrading, contemptuous treatment of women is so
pervasive and so mainstream that it has just about lost its ability to
shock. Guys at sporting events and other public venues have shown no
qualms about raising an insistent chant to nearby women to show their
breasts. An ad for a major long-distance telephone carrier shows three
apparently naked women holding a billing statement from a competitor.
The text asks, "When was the last time you got screwed?"

An ad for Clinique moisturizing lotion shows a woman's face with the
lotion spattered across it to simulate the climactic shot of a porn
video.

We have a problem. Staggering amounts of violence are unleashed on
women every day, and there is no escaping the fact that in the most
sensational stories, large segments of the population are titillated
by that violence. We've been watching the sexualized image of the
murdered 6-year-old JonBenet Ramsey for 10 years. JonBenet is dead.
Her mother is dead. And we're still watching the video of this poor
child prancing in lipstick and high heels.

What have we learned since then? That there's big money to be made
from thongs, spandex tops and sexy makeovers for little girls. In a
misogynistic culture, it's never too early to drill into the minds of
girls that what really matters is their appearance and their ability
to please men sexually.

A girl or woman is sexually assaulted every couple of minutes or so in
the U.S. The number of seriously battered wives and girlfriends is far
beyond the ability of any agency to count. We're all implicated in
this carnage because the relentless violence against women and girls
is linked at its core to the wider society's casual willingness to
dehumanize women and girls, to see them first and foremost as sexual
vessels - objects - and never, ever as the equals of men.

"Once you dehumanize somebody, everything is possible," said Taina
Bien-Aimé, executive director of the women's advocacy group Equality
Now.

That was never clearer than in some of the extreme forms of
pornography that have spread like nuclear waste across mainstream
America. Forget the embarrassed, inhibited raincoat crowd of the old
days. Now Mr. Solid Citizen can come home, log on to this $7 billion
mega-industry and get his kicks watching real women being beaten and
sexually assaulted on Web sites with names like "Ravished Bride" and
"Rough Sex - Where Whores Get Owned."

Then, of course, there's gangsta rap, and the video games where the
players themselves get to maul and molest women, the rise of pimp
culture (the Academy Award-winning song this year was "It's Hard Out
Here for a Pimp"), and on and on.

You're deluded if you think this is all about fun and games. It's all
part of a devastating continuum of misogyny that at its farthest
extreme touches down in places like the one-room Amish schoolhouse in
normally quiet Nickel Mines, Pa.

COME OVER HERE BABE TALK IN THE MIC
there is a campaign to reclaim the word 'misshapes' and bring it back to its original owners, the 90s british indie rock band pulp. i am totally in support of this. since you can hear 'misshapes' at the above link, i present one of my favorite pulp tunes in solidarity:

this cnn 'how indie art thou?' quiz reminds me of 'are you down?' -

here's my score:

You got 6 out of 10 correct on your first attempt.

Moderately down: You can certainly hang, but can you hang with the best of them? Not quite yet. Keep doing what you're doing, though, and soon you'll be quoting obscure movie and song lyrics in everyday life like it's going out of style.

from underworld (don dellilo) -

"So what are you saying?"
"I'm not saying sex is our divinity. Please. Only that sex is the one secret we have that approximates an exalted state and that we share, two people share wordlessly more or less and equally more or less, and this makes it powerful and mysterious and worth sheltering."
"Don't take it into the open, you're saying. But this is because you're still the same romantic person, probably, you were at twenty. Sex is not so secret anymore. The secret is out. You know what sex means to most people?...Sex is what you can get. For some people, most people, it's the most important thing they can get without being born rich or smart or stealing. This is what life can give you that's equal to others or better, even, that you don't have to go to college six years to get. And it's not religion and it's not science but you can explore it and learn things about yourself."

WITH CHERRY THE GHETTONESS NEVER ENDS

cherry and i have this running joke that every time we go out together, it's mad ghetto. examples: PT bar on geary (which requires no explanation of its ghettoness); drinking bacardi from the bottle in my car before going to what used to be social club; all-you-can-drink beer nights after which cherry has to apologize to tall blonde guys for grinding on them too much on the dancefloor the night before, to which they will reply, 'no problem!' [does anyone else remember the hilarity of this??]

it's just who we are; it's how we roll.

last night, of course, was no different. it involved: cherry explaining effects of the feminization of labor; alpha bar (again, requires no explanation); talking to (for way. too. long.) guys who worked for immigration detecting terrorists at sfo; me falling off the curb (cherry laughing, as everyone does); a 20 minute debate on whether a guy was white (says me) or mexican (cherry wishes); spam, curry fish balls, and paying $1 for the smallest cup of water i've ever seen; crashing at steve's empty apt; looking hella rough the next morning, and scaring white mothers and their children (not the british children! - for rj) on arguello.

this, however, is the scene that will always stay with me:
ME (in cherry's ear, after giving her the 'let's go' eyebrows for a while, then kicking her under the bar for half an hour, then getting up to go to the bathroom to call steve for ten minutes): 'Are you ready to go?'
CHERRY: 'How about a few more minutes?'
ME: 'What?'
CHERRY: 'A few more minutes?'
ME: 'Excuse me?'
CHERRY: 'I could stay a little longer.'
ME: 'UM....I'M READY TO GO NOW.'
CHERRY: 'OK, just hold on a second [while I give this guy who has his hand on my butt my number].'

NEXT MORNING -
CHERRY: 'Ms. Lis, you have to tell me how to change my voicemail so it doesn't say my full name.'
ME: 'Did you give him your full name?'
CHERRY: 'Yes, but I don't want him to know it's my real name.'
ME: '.............'

NB: I've added new pics to this post the past two posts before this - check em out

JANE FONDA'S DOG LICKED MY LEG AND I LIKED IT

while i may (and do) bitch about work, i am always impressed by the guests who come to speak here. monday i saw times conservative columnist david brooks; today it was first wave feminist power duo gloria ('g-lo?') steinem and jane fonda. and it was PACKED. i had to watch the CCTV broadcast in another room downstairs. popped into the bathroom before the show and almost stepped on a cute little dog sans leash. what the hell, i thought - these güglers and their sense of entitlement! the nerve, bringing a dog into the BATHROOM - was it not ok to leave the dog at ones desk for three minutes? but the dog was well-behaved, standing silently and faithfully outside its owner's stall, and whenever it would peek under the stall, the owner cooed at it, 'hello, baby! hello!'

sick, thought i. SICK.

i came out and while i was washing my hands, i felt something lick my calf. i looked down and saw the offender. grey is in this season, i thought, and i have been looking for a nice little stole. CATCH THOSE PUPPIES!

NB: this image also came up when i searched 'cruella de ville' -

sad, but not untrue

later during the talk, schmidtty (who is increasingly reminding me of a cross between the doozers on fraggle rock and beaker from the muppets

+

=

?)

mentions how jane fonda (who was looking a little robert evans for the wear - look how hot she used to be!) has brought her little dog tulea with her on stage. and, like a true diva, she brought the dog along even though she was not even aware of our dog friendly campus. also apparently she brings the dog EVERYWHERE - santa barbara, san francisco, atlanta, palm beach, FL; lexington, KY.

anyways, the talk was very first wave - equality for women in politics, workplace, home. blah blah blah. the only time they mention women of color is when they talk about women in 'the global south' (how chic) - what about the women of color in your own country? plus they always talk about how this generation lacks the anger of their generation, and that always makes me SO. MAD. it didn't make things any better that there were no young feminsts there to refute that opinion - in fact at least one young woman came to the mic who admitted to being detached from feminism (i think one was crying because her mom had been so much more passionate about feminism than she was) and went on to speak as if that was the status quo among young women.

far from it, my friend.

here are some pics:

MAKING OUT IS IN FOR FALL

just another typical night at the elbo room, in our usual corner (the one with the video game machine tables) - but alas, what is this?

three different couples making out like crazy! and that was just in our little corner. including one asian guy who was certainly NOT cute enough to get that much tongue action or STRADDLED (ignore earlier post about asian guys deserving more ass). these three brazen couples seemed totally unawares of our group of ten people staring and pointing at them in disgust. WHEN DID IT BECOME OK TO MAKE OUT AT THE ELBO ROOM?!??!

***PHOTOS HERE (the couple behind us didn't come out though...)

what a gorgeous weekend. every weekend, i say 'this is probably the last nice weekend of this year,' but this time i really mean it. how many 75 degree days does sf have left in it? not many. time to shake out the sweaters...or steal steve's as the case may be. i'm all about boyfriend clothes for fall.

speaking of, i've been looking for a caramel colored slouchy leather bag for fall, and every time i come across something labeled a 'hobo bag,' i think of steve, who saw one named such a few weeks ago and said, 'that's not nice.' ahh, yes, standing up for homeless everywhere against the brutes of fashion!

--
so out with biff the other night, and i pointed out a white guy who i thought was cute. i asked biff (who is white-ish) whether i had bad taste in white men. she said she thought he was gay, but also that he looked asian-ish. WHAT? how can a white man look asian? she says that she thinks asian men have 'finer features' than white men. i said that's probably cuz they don't grow facial hair. interesting, i have never heard a white woman's opinions of asian men - steve wants me to find out more so he can post tips on the internet.

--
also, don't worry, drunken wedding pics of me are forthcoming - i got a preview last night, sheesh

LIFE LESSONS LEARNED BY WATCHING FIVE SEASONS OF AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL

you would be surprised at how often situations on antm mirror real life.

a running list:

1) don't mess with someone's energy drinks in the fridge. in brie's immortal words, 'don't touch my food.' (fixed the link - thanks, chai - didn't think anyone would actually click that)

and if you have to drink them, bitch betta REPLACE THOSE!

2) this is NOT america's next top best friend.

3) I know I'm a threat. I'm a strong-ass woman. I'm a souljah sister. Recognize.

4) don't stay out late if you have to get up early the next day. (ok, that was austin scarlett project runway season 1, but someone on antm must have said it once)

5) who's you're biggest competition in the house?

to be continued...(sadly)
by the way, hello to my devoted reader in south salem, new york, who reads me daily - reveal thyself! i can't remember anyone i know in westchester -

BARF...ZING!
i'm way behind on this - some of you may have seen this on gawker:Japanese Women Catch the "Korean Wave"

Entertainment industry leaders in Seoul credit the phenomenon to good marketing coupled with an uncanny response throughout Asia to the expressive nature of the South Koreans -- long dubbed the Italians of Asia. A hearty diet and two years of forced military duty, industry leaders and fans insist, have also made young South Korean men among the buffest in Asia. Most important, however, has been the South Korean entertainment industry's perfection of the strong, silent type on screen -- typically rich, kind men with coincidentally striking looks and a tendency to shower women with unconditional love.

"It's a type of character that doesn't exist much in Asian movies and television, and now it's what Asian women think Korean men are like," said Kim Ok Hyun, director of Star M, a major star management company in Seoul.

"But to tell you the truth," she said. "I still haven't met a real one who fits that description."

WHY WON'T I LEARN??

ugh so i had a horrible upset stomach yesterday after breakfast, and i suspected the 'farmer's hash,' which is a super delish mix of sausage, onions, ham, and potatoes topped with a poached egg and cilantro.

yet. YET -

i ate it again today. now i have a horrible upset stomach that is lasting way longer than yesterday. it's lunchtime, but the thought of food is making me gag, especially since i tried on my bridesmaid's dress last night too. i want to work out after lunch (if i ever eat any of it), but i always feel sick when i do that, too.

why, god, why? why is life so hard??

--

fave quote from steve last weekend, looking at a nordstrom rack mailer: 'you want me to buy you an $18 roxy hoody?'

--
in world news - has everyone see tomkat's HAPA CHILD???

--
in state and local news - everytime i hang out with rj, i find out way more than i want to know. like robert redford sez: too many secrets!!!!

--
in national news - sometimes i feel like i am the only one dating an asian guy. this makes me sad-ish. sure, i am the first person to acknowledge they have their faults, but no need to write off the entire race as a whole. especially if you have never even dated an asian guy before! everyone should be judged on their own merits, not according to stereotypes or preconceptions. also, contrary to popular belief, it's really not that difficult to meet cool, smart, not short asian dudes, if that's what you're looking for. beefy ones are more challenging, but the fuck - three out of four aren't bad. sense of humor? now you're just being too picky.

dear asian guys - the bad apples (losers, nerds, dickheads, egomaniacs, chauvinists, pervs) are ruining your pussy bunch. HAHAHA.

i watched 'bad education' a few nights ago - i think i never saw it when it was in theatres because of a bad review in the voice. i think i was also really turned off by the promo photos of gael garcia bernal in drag - it seemed to be a campy drag queen movie mixed with a pedophilic priest tragedy, and who wants to see that?

what a mistake - the movie was as good as anything almodovar has done. i love how he really revels in colors in his choice of costumes and sets, even when the tone and mood are fairly somber (see 'all about my mother'). also gael garcia bernal can really act (and is really HOT).

my method of reading reviews and making decisions goes thus: i skim the times, the new yorker, the village voice and formulate an average from the three. awhile ago steve and i were talking about who the best film reviews are - i like a.o., manohla, kenneth turan, but anthony lane is a master of film criticism. from one of my favorite reviews, of revenge of the sith:

No, the one who gets me is Yoda. May I take the opportunity to enter a brief plea in favor of his extermination? Any educated moviegoer would know what to do, having watched that helpful sequence in “Gremlins” when a small, sage-colored beastie is fed into an electric blender. A fittingly frantic end, I feel, for the faux-pensive stillness on which the Yoda legend has hung. At one point in the new film, he assumes the role of cosmic shrink—squatting opposite Anakin in a noirish room, where the light bleeds sideways through slatted blinds. Anakin keeps having problems with his dark side, in the way that you or I might suffer from tennis elbow, but Yoda, whose reptilian smugness we have been encouraged to mistake for wisdom, has the answer. “Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose,” he says. Hold on, Kermit, run that past me one more time. If you ever got laid (admittedly a long shot, unless we can dig you up some undiscerning alien hottie with a name like Jar Jar Gabor), and spawned a brood of Yodettes, are you saying that you’d leave them behind at the first sniff of danger? Also, while we’re here, what’s with the screwy syntax? Deepest mind in the galaxy, apparently, and you still express yourself like a day-tripper with a dog-eared phrase book. “I hope right you are.” Break me a fucking give.

papabasco came to eat lunch at work today with my sister. he ate grilled wild salmon, a goji-blackberry smoothie, a plum, green beans and some salad. later we passed by a fridge where he stared at the perrier on the top shelf.

"perrier," he said. "there's no flavor. it tastes just like water. in paris, that's all anyone drinks. but, i'll tell you what - it gives you gas."

it sure does, dad, it sure does.

RUN. DON'T WALK. (at the castro in sept)

IS EVERYONE IN LAW SCHOOL?
i want to do a u.s. tour and visit everyone across the country, and then write a bernard-henri levy-like essay about the modern u.s. OR a hunter s. thompson-like hallucination. or an 'on the road' style tour of freight cars and diner apple pies and vanilla ice creams.

cmon, people, grad school is SO 2004. HAHAHAHAHA

ahhh, pretty good list of things you gotta do before you can call yourself a new yorker (from time out ny, via nina). i used to order my morning coffee from my friendly coffee cart on 114th street, saying 'coffee, light' (w/milk and sugar) - which is probably why i am on the verge of cavities!! anyways, who else misses new york???!?!

The Most Serene Republic of Macabascolia
"Love it or leave it"

UN Category: Democratic Socialists
Civil Rights: Excellent
Economy: Basket Case
Political Freedoms: Excellent
Location: the South Pacific

Regional Influence: Minnow

The Most Serene Republic of Macabascolia is a tiny, socially progressive nation, notable for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 5 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Healthcare, and Education. The average income tax rate is 57%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Woodchip Exports.

Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Macabascolia's national animal is the yak, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the mack.

YEP

the most difficult part of blogging is the pressure to write around a single theme, in an essay-like manner. i'm going to experiment a little bit and abandon that quest today. i had a dream this weekend that rj got the job he is applying for. i like routines, and then i like to break out and find a completely different routine. i've been running four days a week because my doctor said three days wasn't good enough. i had the most delicious curry-rubbed butterfish for lunch today, cooked perfectly. when i can't find mp3s on limewire, i use elbo.ws. i miss robot because now there is no one to compile the lisa zeitgeist. i'm toying with the theory that we gravitate towards personalities opposite of those who we're mostly surrounded with at work. the hot middle of summer has passed, and i have gone back to wearing pants to work. i'm really obsessed with target's GO international but have only bought one thing so far from all three lines. i think this photo of susan sontag is the coolest author photo ever. we're going to see phoenix at slim's next month!

ARF
i think there is some confusion about the 'wet dog' remark i posted earlier this month. i first heard about it here in this really amusing 'fresh air' interview with a black writer on the show 'scrubs' - listen to the whole thing if you are a scrubs fan, or start at minute 6 to hear the bit about how black people think white people smell like wet dog. apparently there is also a book about this phenomenon?!? i wonder what asian people smell like...besides mothballs (ali wong's joke).

WHAT KIND OF ASSHOLE DO YOU HAVE TO BE TO NOT LIKE 'LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE'?

after months of not going out and seeing any movies, i have been to the cinema three times in three weeks to see three times, lil miss sunshine and miami vice. i have not really liked or enjoyed any of them, sadly. and i know everyone's blog is blowing up about how great little miss sunshine was, but maybe i was just expecting more since it got such hype from the critics. maybe i'm in an anti-movie mood. maybe i just like being contrary.

luckily, i have season 1 of project runway on dvd to integrate into my post-work routine (thanks, chai). i've never seen the first half of season 1, and i'm getting real nostalgic with some of the places they go - the gristedes near 72th street (that i used to go to and comparison shop with the fairway that's practically next door) is where they go in the first episode to buy their corn husks and 30 van dam where they sell their 'envy' cotton wares is where i went to look for bethany's rad fly earrings last year.

i am fulfilling my indie rock destiny and going to see death cab/spoon/mates of state at the greek tomorrow. WITH STEVE, which is even more disgusting, since it is like the perfect indie rock couples show. YUCK! anyways i'm really looking forward to it though, they're one of my favorite bands.
WHY I WANT TO WORK FOR CONDE NAST...CAFETERIA
'I'm Feeling Sassy!'

The other day, Lowdown found the following written exchanges on an official comment board while visiting the fourth-floor cafeteria in Condé Nast's Times Square headquarters:

#
"Trisha" asked for "a jelly w/no sugar added and brown rice for sushi," and went on: "Can you order more diet root beer ... and more vanilla low-cal yogurt?" The cafeteria's typed answer: "Yes we will order these things ... just as soon as we change the cafe into a Health Food Store."

#
Another customer requested "raspberries and blackberries @ the fruit table." The cafeteria's response: "You can sit and patiently wait for the Farmers Market."

#
"Nicole" wrote: "Why are we always out of crackers??" The cafeteria's answer: "You're right, we being too generous with giving them out for free!! What are we thinking?"

#
"Russell" asked: "How about a BLT station for the summer? Wheat toast, hickory smoked bacon, the whole nine yards!" The cafeteria's response: "How about you order a BLT from the Sandwich Station?"

#
Another employee requested: "Make more frittata in the morning please!!!" The cafeteria retorted: "We have frittata everyday until 10:30. On another note I know a great eye doctor."

Tuesday, August 08, 2006

last week's on the media had an interesting segment comparing Food Network shows to porn: listen to 'pornucopia' (mp3). i almost thought they were going to liken 'iron chef' to 'asian fetish' porn. what i want to know is - when is there going to be a true hottie male chef? all the current male chefs are either hefty, nerdy, gay or firecrotch. i wonder if someone could analyze male food network personalities and what they say about the kind of men women really want in the kitchen. when will we have our male giada???

NEW: check this out - food network show or porn star? (totally NSFW)

sfist has a handy guide to 'downtown business interests' vs. progressives in sf - overall, pretty right on (you mean they're NOT republicans?), though i take some offense to the suggestion that progressives don't have love for h & m as well.

...that makes one interesting post in the month since i've started reading, sfist!
there was a story in the ny post today about music that's played in retail stores, and i have to say i really like the music at forever 21. it's kind of indie pop dance stuff (we are scientists, etc) and it lulls me into buying crazy printed things and blatantly fake gold looking earrings that i would not buy otherwise.

the summer of the double date

the new thing is double dating. we went out with emily and alan to oyaji, a japanese 'folk food' place whose name is apparently japanese for 'dirty old man,' in reference to the owner, who is indeed dirty and old. upon learning that i was filipino (instead of his initial guess of taiwanese - at which i nearly choked on my natto), he drunkenly made a facial-hand gesture to indicate fellatio. always class, what i love about the japanese.

last night we went to samwon in oakland for delicious korean bbq with chai and shawn. two new things we learned about them:
1) chai did not know the saying 'sticks and stones'
2) shawn had photos of heidi klum as his screensaver until he met chai, at which point they mysteriously disappeared from his computer.

there was also this exchange, about the many hookers on russian hill:

steve: 'so, do you see many pimps around here?'
shawn: 'only when i look in the mirror!'

---

another feat - the korean owner of art's cafe knows my 'usual' (tofu scramble, no eggs, over rice) - steve ordered the wrong scramble and she corrected him. AWESOME.
---
if you're white, and you hear someone yelling 'wet dog!' at you from a passing car, it's steve.

just cuz it's a great looking cover

ok a few more thoughts when i really should be going to bed. it's really difficult to feel at home in a city, even if, say, you were born and raised here. i feel like i've discovered a whole new city in the past year or so, and maybe i don't like it as much as i used to when i was younger, or maybe it's changed and doesn't like me as much. i really have to give it to people who succeed at building a life in a city, really settling in, content on walking and re-walking the same roads every day, making a simple sandwich from an empty fridge, falling asleep on a couch on a sunny saturday. maybe when you were a teenager, you used to go to the same mall, the same cafe, the same clubs, the same ice cream parlors. and then you blink and you're 25 and you find yourself in all these hidden unexpected places with these new people. you're running down folsom street towards oola in heels that were certainly not meant for running, so you duck into a doorway and put on your flats. you're eating way too many fried dishes at sauce when you feel a 4.7 earthquake. you're waiting in front of A1 for 45 minutes for old friends who are late and smoking way too many cigarettes. you're dancing a kind of twist-hop next to old white women with flashing-light-heels at a blues club downtown. you're playing drunken bocce ball in speedway meadows in golden gate park in 90 degree heat. or you're drinking red bull in your car in front of club six on sixth street with your friends who are all wearing a mini skirt, big earrings, or both, because you think that's what 'hip hop' looks like.

and it becomes way too convoluted and laborious to explain to others how you know someone because it sounds something like: 'my boyfriend's new york roommate's friend from college's wife's sister. who i also went to high school with. and knows my old roommate from dc. and met my friend from beijing once." and it's much easier to just say you know someone 'from college,' but those two words really don't do justice to your history, do they. and it gets infinitely more complex to explain how you know someone if you met them through marg0t for some reason.

in the words of shakespeare - 'what country, friends, is this?'

As some of you know, there is an odd sexualization going on here at work in my department, since the vast majority of workers here are women...and I just found this annoying post here:

A friend of mine just sent me this message that we can now chat with the G00g1e Girls Live. It seems that all of the account reps are female and now they have added an option to email or chat with an Adwords Rep to see if they can help you spend some more of your money.

a / s / L ?

Sadly, seems techie geeks are just as sexist as men at large - how condescending is it to call them 'G00g1e Girls'?? I hear horrible stories about women here getting hit on all the time by the clients they work with. They have to put up with it for the sake of customer service. What's worse is that these are all really smart, hard-working, successful women who deserve mad respect, not derogatory little remarks like this.

from jason's review of 'passing it on':

Yuri's -passing it on is her memoir that was started at the age of 77. The book is dedicated to her grandchildren. It's interesting that Yuri, like Grace Lee dedicates a chapter to her late partner. She includes a chapter on Teddy Bears too.

best quote of the weekend: 'where'd you get those shoes??'
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE LOOKING AT, SUGAR TITS?

too precious not to post here:

Once inside the car, a source directly connected with the case says Gibson began banging himself against the seat. The report says Gibson told the deputy, "You mother f****r. I'm going to f*** you." The report also says "Gibson almost continually [sic] threatened me saying he 'owns Malibu' and will spend all of his money to 'get even' with me." The report says Gibson then launched into a barrage of anti-Semitic statements: "F*****g Jews... The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world." Gibson then asked the deputy, "Are you a Jew?" The deputy became alarmed as Gibson's tirade escalated, and called ahead for a sergeant to meet them when they arrived at the station. When they arrived, a sergeant began videotaping Gibson, who noticed the camera and then said, "What the f*** do you think you're doing?" A law enforcement source says Gibson then noticed another female sergeant and yelled, "What do you think you're looking at, sugar tits?"

it is SO simple, really:

flip-flops ¹ shoes
mini skirt ¹ appropriate for work

and while we're at it:
note to white people: YOU MUST WEAR DEODORANT. EVERY DAY. AT ALL TIMES. ESPECIALLY IN THE SUMMERTIME. EVEN IF YOU THINK AIR CONDITIONING WILL MASK YOUR B.O. (half-white people, you too)

and if you're going to be the one asshole who holds up the entire shuttle by driving into the lot just as we're about to leave, and the driver is nice enough to wait for your late ass, have the DECENCY to RUN to the shuttle from your car - we're all waiting for you. even a trot would be appreciated.

also, i just came up with a wonderful conclusion: the value of a writer in the eyes of a company is INVERSELY proportional to the amount of money the writer will get paid at that company.

i went to the california shakespeare theater in orinda with laur, mike, and steve on tuesday to see this month's play, 'restoration comedy.' it wasn't one of shakespeare's plays, but written in the style of (a small group of men and women and their mate-switching and un-switching). my mom used to take laur and i when we were pre-teens, and i always had really fond memories of it - i remember distinctly a strong smell of wine in the outdoor theatre under starry nights, and bringing a picnic dinner, lawn chairs and a thermos of hot chocolate for intermission. this time, we brought zachary's pizza for dinner and a glass of champagne (there was a tasting) before the show. we also brought a bottle of wine to drink during the show to complement the wasabi shrimp chips (class).

i have to say, for those few of you who live in the bay, you should really really check this out. it's a great experience. the backdrop of the theatre is the orinda hills, and it's kind of in a small forrested area. when the sun sets, the stage really pops out, and the acting is really good. what's more, if you're under 30, tickets are only $15 for weekday shows! that's amazing considering they're usually almost $50. i recommend sitting in section E, where you have to bring your own seats, but you get an entire view of the stage. in august they'll show the 'merchant of venice,' and in september it will be 'as you like it.' what's neat is that it usually isn't set in shakespearean times - they're almost always set in other time periods, so it's slightly easier to understand, and the costumes aren't just pantaloons and whatever.

---

the cheesy ass modern love columns usually make me want to barf, but this has been among the times' most popular stories for weeks. the pith - treat your sig oth as a trainer tasked with breaking in a naughty animal. that means use the approximation system of rewards and give no response to bad behavior. i think this method really works, or at least it makes you less stressed. serenity now! thanks, jane blog.
i'm a nazi when it comes to washing my clothes - i love them way too much to just throw in the washer and dryer. i meticulously analyze each tag for instructions and when in doubt, i hand wash or dryel. thus, washing a load of clothes takes me about 3 hours. thank god i just found this, a guide to those odd little symbols on tags. never again will i have to guess wtf a square with a circle inside it and two dots inside the circle means!

if you have a spare half an hour or so, i highly recommend this fresh air interview with times' baghdad correspondent dexter filkins. terry gross asks all the questions i would ask, and it ends up being a kind of 'iraq-iran-hezbollah 101' from one of the times' best writers in iraq. plus, it's interesting to hear what the word is on the ground and what life is really like there.
