Where Have All the Lisas Gone?
About half of all boys in Raleigh Colony were named John, Thomas or William, and more than half of newborn girls in the Massachusetts Bay Colony were named Mary, Elizabeth or Sarah. Even in the 20th century, John, William, James and Robert were, in some combination, the top three names for boys for more than 50 years. Among girls, Mary held on to No. 1 for 46 years, when it was supplanted for six years by Linda, fought its way back for another nine, then succumbed to the juggernaut of Lisa.

who misses sf? or mostly the wine at eos?
(from the sfgate morning fix newsletter)
To Alex: Things for you to do while visiting S.F. for three months before you split for England for two years: Sonoma and Russian River and Baker Beach and wine flights at Eos, new shoes from Gimme Shoes and a mandatory stop at the new Good Vibrations on Polk to stock up, big-ass salad at Intermezzo and cheese bread from the Cheese Board (in Berkeley), dim sum from Tom Kiang on Geary and a mandatory stroll down North Beach on a warm night and a walk along Chrissy Field and a hike in Mt. Tam, power yoga and Amoeba Music and a picnic in GG and/or Dolores Park, a visit to the dogs at the SFSPCA and a burrito in the Mission and sake at Hamano and a bag of small chocolate chip cookies from Hot Cookie in the Castro and a vegan chocolate truffle from Rainbow Grocery and a sexy expensive pen from Flax and get lost deep in Green Apple books on Clement. Oh man. Too much more to list here. Good enough to start?

highlights from saturday night (from what i can piece together from my own memory and the testimonials of others):
-calling margot's boyfriend and talking to him at length about her tongue ring and pleasures
-calling margot "mar-jo" and RJ "jose"
-my first time with the beer bong (rj: "on your knees..." me: "if i had a nickel for every time a guy said that to me...") and getting beer all over the floor
-berating the boys for relegating margot to the kitchen to make fries while they sat around and did nothing ("patriarchy!!!")
-playing slapjack aka egyptian rat screw
-me to james:"we still didn't 123456! we might not have enough time to do that. maybe just enough time to 1234."
-me to RJ: "we need to pasar pasar por la tienda and have a merienda."
-trying to call nancy on james' phone but being completely unable to find her name
-lin stroking jaime's hair (and me freaking out)
-asking the boys how much they weigh (i have no idea why)
-me to lin: "if you didn't have a 'teen' attached to your name [i meant age], jaime would totally get with you."
-margot: "you know we both work at eeoc because we're both wearing eyeliner."
-me: "i can tread water like whoa."

it says "property of U.S. government" on my badge
so i work for the government now (who knew?!), and the first thing i see when i walk into the building? georgie bush's face with this icky toothy smile plastered on it and big eyes. it looks totally unnatural, sorta like that soundgarden video where everyone's face is distorted. not a great way to start the first day at work.
everyone in dc totally knows each other, especially if you're an asian american student. i've really enjoyed meeting all these new people! and you know i don't even like meeting new people. it's great to kick it with my roomies and my co-intern; they're so fun. i'm having a fabulous time in DC and i haven't even been sightseeing yet.

check out the last quote of the story -- dude, i could totally be an assemblywoman, too.
SACRAMENTO -- As one lawmaker warbled his alma mater, the state Assembly on Thursday rejected a bill that would bar California public schools from using Indian names as their mascots unless they had permission from a nearby tribe.
The bill would bar schools from using redskins, Indians, braves, chiefs, papooses, or any Indian tribal name as a nickname or mascot unless they had an agreement with a nearby tribe to use the name. It also would prohibit schools from using warriors or sentinels if those names were accompanied by Indian imagery.
Bill supporters said the names and, sometimes the way they are used, are insulting to Indians.
"You do not have to have racist intent to have racist outcome," Goldberg said.
But opponents labeled the bill trivial and said schools choose Indian names to give their teams a sense of toughness and pride, not to insult Indians.
Assemblyman Tim Leslie, R-Tahoe City, whose high school's nickname was the Apaches, sang his school song to protest the bill.
He said the school, Arcadia High, near Los Angeles, had permission from an Apache tribe in Arizona to use the name.
"You people are so messed up it is just beyond description," he told bill supporters.

i'm going going back back to frisco
moved out of my berkeley place today. it was disgustingly hot, plus all the dust everywhere from packing things equals yechhh. there were also two nosy ass black cats creeping around everywhere. they were kinda cute and i was petting them a lot, but then lina said that they had been lying in their litter box a lot. i need a shower.
i can't believe i'm never going to wake up in that room again, hungover and annoyed at the noises of construction next door AND construction across the street. at my downstairs roommate listening loudly to the SAME chinese pop song over and over again. at another roommate talking loudly on the phone in the hallway right outside my door at 8 am. at ANOTHER roommate stomping around the house with his heavy footsteps. at having to get up early to go to a bullshit class (ethnic studies 101b).
ever see that movie "less than zero" with andrew mccarthy and james spader (i think that's who's in it...maybe robert downey jr)? last night i went to a party that was straight out of that first party scene, except without the coke. it was at this massive house in orinda, around the pool, with all these young kids. i sat down at the hookah, and one of biff's friends said "who are you?" -- it was a very alice in wonderland moment. i was like um i'm biff's friend, and he was like "i know, but who are you?" it was a strange way of asking me about myself, and i don't recommend using it. but it was a gorgeous night up in the orinda hills, where you could actually see stars in the sky. the party was mildly entertaining (i played and lost that drinking game beirut).
so i'm back at home. my house is way too small for the accumulated things of TWO twenty something girls, so everyone is a little cranky, and my dad is on a house-fixing rampage to accommodate all our stuff. i just want to lay around and watch "mrs. parker and the vicious circle" and maybe "st. elmo's fire." i'm trying to convince my parents to retire in berkeley. when we went to chez panisse, they were really taken with that area. it would be so cool to live in one of berkeley's nicer spots.
anyways, back to unpacking madness. i'm leaving for DC june 8 if anyone wants to kick it before then.

biff: "what's two times two?" me: *drunken groan*
i've been partying like it's my birthday for about a week straight. "one must always be drunk."
i was pretty sad to leave berkeley (and my college life) on saturday, but luckily i drowned my sorrows with kimi, biff, et. al on fillmore that night. tequila awaited us once again, but this time vodka quickly followed suit. we ended the night at mel's ("MEL'S! ON VAN NESS!!" i know nina hates that one) with talk of "animal style" everything, a toast to immigrants, and a disgusting plate of "wet fries." i cannot believe i consumed something with the name "wet fries." only god knows how i got home that night (i owe you one!). red lights can't stop me!
i chilled with my mom yesterday. we saw "down with love," which i enjoyed. very fluffy. ewan not as cute as in moulin rouge. there was this good line in there: "the men i work with resent my success and won't give me the time of day, while the men who respect my success won't give me the time of night."
i had my second homecooked dinner last night at my grandma's. it was great. i like my independence, but there is really nothing like a good homecooked meal. i met up with kimi and biff again later on polk at the hemlock tavern in an unprecedented second night of partying with kimi and biff. after an obscenely large shot (it was really two shots) of tequila followed by another half shot of the same, we moved the party to north beach. i proceeded to get extremely drunk at fuse, while kimi worked her game on biff's visiting friend. i don't remember much of what happened after fuse, but they tell me that they stopped at nezario's (i slept in the car). i woke up in biff's bed this morning with hangover3000 and having to coax myself into not throwing up. i felt nauseous the entire morning until we went to irving street cafe where i gorged myself with eggs, hash browns, and sausages ("lisa likes sausage, hehe" -- biff).
some highlights of the night:
"you look really pretty when i'm drunk" -- biff to me
"i wanna be on your cusp" -- me to biff
"if you wanna be a journalist, you have to be a drunk" -- biff, as she slid over a drink
"i'm gonna get it. i CAN get it!" -- kimi, who did get it
"i fooled you all!" -- me to kimi, about really just pretending to be drunk
