The Medium is the Message...this
RIP Marshall McLuhan, 1911-1980 (on this day)
Thank you for inflicting numerous hours of painful media theory on lowly undergraduate mass communications students who really want to be writers and could give less of a shit about "hot" and "cold" media. Thank you for turning the study of media into a cold, sterile, unfriendly, intrusive, confusing, annoying activity. Thank you for paragraph after paragraph of dry robot text.
Brilliant cameo in "Annie Hall," though...

Where Have All the Lisas Gone?
About half of all boys in Raleigh Colony were named John, Thomas or William, and more than half of newborn girls in the Massachusetts Bay Colony were named Mary, Elizabeth or Sarah. Even in the 20th century, John, William, James and Robert were, in some combination, the top three names for boys for more than 50 years. Among girls, Mary held on to No. 1 for 46 years, when it was supplanted for six years by Linda, fought its way back for another nine, then succumbed to the juggernaut of Lisa.

who misses sf? or mostly the wine at eos?
(from the sfgate morning fix newsletter)
To Alex: Things for you to do while visiting S.F. for three months before you split for England for two years: Sonoma and Russian River and Baker Beach and wine flights at Eos, new shoes from Gimme Shoes and a mandatory stop at the new Good Vibrations on Polk to stock up, big-ass salad at Intermezzo and cheese bread from the Cheese Board (in Berkeley), dim sum from Tom Kiang on Geary and a mandatory stroll down North Beach on a warm night and a walk along Chrissy Field and a hike in Mt. Tam, power yoga and Amoeba Music and a picnic in GG and/or Dolores Park, a visit to the dogs at the SFSPCA and a burrito in the Mission and sake at Hamano and a bag of small chocolate chip cookies from Hot Cookie in the Castro and a vegan chocolate truffle from Rainbow Grocery and a sexy expensive pen from Flax and get lost deep in Green Apple books on Clement. Oh man. Too much more to list here. Good enough to start?

highlights from saturday night (from what i can piece together from my own memory and the testimonials of others):
-calling margot's boyfriend and talking to him at length about her tongue ring and pleasures
-calling margot "mar-jo" and RJ "jose"
-my first time with the beer bong (rj: "on your knees..." me: "if i had a nickel for every time a guy said that to me...") and getting beer all over the floor
-berating the boys for relegating margot to the kitchen to make fries while they sat around and did nothing ("patriarchy!!!")
-playing slapjack aka egyptian rat screw
-me to james:"we still didn't 123456! we might not have enough time to do that. maybe just enough time to 1234."
-me to RJ: "we need to pasar pasar por la tienda and have a merienda."
-trying to call nancy on james' phone but being completely unable to find her name
-lin stroking jaime's hair (and me freaking out)
-asking the boys how much they weigh (i have no idea why)
-me to lin: "if you didn't have a 'teen' attached to your name [i meant age], jaime would totally get with you."
-margot: "you know we both work at eeoc because we're both wearing eyeliner."
-me: "i can tread water like whoa."

it says "property of U.S. government" on my badge
so i work for the government now (who knew?!), and the first thing i see when i walk into the building? georgie bush's face with this icky toothy smile plastered on it and big eyes. it looks totally unnatural, sorta like that soundgarden video where everyone's face is distorted. not a great way to start the first day at work.
everyone in dc totally knows each other, especially if you're an asian american student. i've really enjoyed meeting all these new people! and you know i don't even like meeting new people. it's great to kick it with my roomies and my co-intern; they're so fun. i'm having a fabulous time in DC and i haven't even been sightseeing yet.

check out the last quote of the story -- dude, i could totally be an assemblywoman, too.
SACRAMENTO -- As one lawmaker warbled his alma mater, the state Assembly on Thursday rejected a bill that would bar California public schools from using Indian names as their mascots unless they had permission from a nearby tribe.
The bill would bar schools from using redskins, Indians, braves, chiefs, papooses, or any Indian tribal name as a nickname or mascot unless they had an agreement with a nearby tribe to use the name. It also would prohibit schools from using warriors or sentinels if those names were accompanied by Indian imagery.
Bill supporters said the names and, sometimes the way they are used, are insulting to Indians.
"You do not have to have racist intent to have racist outcome," Goldberg said.
But opponents labeled the bill trivial and said schools choose Indian names to give their teams a sense of toughness and pride, not to insult Indians.
Assemblyman Tim Leslie, R-Tahoe City, whose high school's nickname was the Apaches, sang his school song to protest the bill.
He said the school, Arcadia High, near Los Angeles, had permission from an Apache tribe in Arizona to use the name.
"You people are so messed up it is just beyond description," he told bill supporters.
