RIAA ADMITS PIRACY GOOFS
The RIAA sent out more than two dozen letters this week apologizing for incorrectly targeting colleges suspected of posting copywritten music on their servers. One of the warnings arrived at Penn State University, accusing professors of posting songs by R&B singer USHER on a university-hosted site. The RIAA had mistakenly zeroed in on and linked an MP3 of a song by a group of astronomers about a satellite posted by an astrophysics professor emeritus named Peter Usher. In addition to the apology, the RIAA intends to send the professor an Usher CD and T-shirt.

One must always be drunk.
Everything lies in that; it is the only question worth considering. In order not to feel the horrible burden of time which breaks your shoulders and bows you down to earth, you must intoxicate yourself without truce -- but with what?
With wine, poetry, art? As you will; but intoxicate yourself.
And if sometimes upon the steps of a palace, or upon the green grass of a moat, or in the sad solitude of your own room, you awake -- intoxication already diminished or disappeared - ask of the wind, of the wave, of the star, of the bird, of the clock, of all that flies, of all that groans, of all that rolls, of all that sings, of all that speaks - ask, what time is it?
And the wind, the wave, the star, the bird, the clock, will answer you, "It is time to intoxicate yourself."
In order to escape from the slavish martyrdom of time, intoxicate yourself; unceasingly intoxicate yourself; with wine, or poetry, or art - as you will.

fan mail
i got this today in response to a column i wrote in my high school paper four years ago:
Hi Lisa,
Apologies ahead of time, if this intrudes upon your
time. No, I'm not a stalker (famous last words). I
recently stumbled upon an article you wrote "Half
Chinese, half Filipino, all American, and proud of
it". I plugged in your name, and it led me to this
email address, so I figured I'd write. I can totally
relate to many of the points you made. I'm actually
"wholly" chinese, born in the heart of manhattan. It
does suck quite a bit when people expect you to be a
certain way. Although I respect my background, and
even cherish it in some ways, it doesn't automatically
depict or define who I am. I grew up in a very
"white" neighborhood. It's always been and continues
to be a struggle to fit in, just because I'm not
"chinese" enough or "american" enough. You don't hear
a whole lot about asian discrimination... but it
exists unfortunately. How about just human? I figure
i'm a decent human, even a really nice one! I too,
get really tired of preconcieved expectations of a
person I look like. It stinks people don't take the
time to find out how multi-faceted an individual can
be. I don't know who to blame for it, or if anyone
can be blamed for it. Is it just human nature to
judge? In a part-time job I held a while back... I
had to deal with someone writing a check to pay for
something.. their ID didn't match anything on the
check. So I called the manager, and I was accused of
being racist.. because you chinks are all alike. That
infuriated me... it didn't matter what race the other
person was.. but it did remind me how things haven't
changed very much. I pride myself on giving people a
fair shake independent of backgrounds or general
opinions, and I'd wish more people would.
Ok, I just babbled a lot. I just wanted to say thanks
for addressing some of this stuff in your writings and
participating in causes that educate.
Thanks for reading...

today wasn't that bad. yes, i did get caught in the rain in flimsy slippers and without an umbrella. yes, i ran into the guy i blogged about two entries ago, and he made me feel pretty shitty about applying to only one grad school and that one grad school being berkeley. he even called me "stupid" a few times, which was really uncalled for considering that we rarely see each other (plus he's not even graduating on time, so why is he getting on my ass for not going to grad school? lesson learned: don't ever idealize guys. they'll only let you down). but after i put on some warm socks and my pjs, and had some french vanilla coffee in my friendly yellow mug, i'm alright.
yesterday anne and i had a bite at naan n curry for dinner and then we traipsed over to amoeba where i found the beatles anthology 8-tape box set on VHS for $30. i believe it sells for around $99 or something regularly. it was such a steal, i had to buy it. i remember taping all 20 hours or whatever when the whole thing was on PBS in high school. it's a really good series if you're a beatles fan. i guess i'm a pretty big beatles fan. george is my favorite (i love "something," "while my guitar gently weeps," and "here comes the sun"), but i think i'm most like john (he died ten days before i was born; i like to think a bit of him is reincarnated in me). the one i'm most attracted to is stu (the bass player who left to pursue an art career but then died from a brain hemorrhage--"backbeat" is a great movie, no joke), who is, as they say in england, "well fit." so anne and i watched the first video, which covers from when they were born to when they got together up until their first number one single ("please please me"). so between that, six hours of "manor house," the "90210" reunion on sunday, and the "dawson's creek" series finale, i'm all set for TV for the rest of the month at least.
i better get to writing my paper. must really stay on task in these last few weeks. it is so easy to avoid work, especially with these 7 beatles videos staring at me.
oh, and i got a job offer to be a newspaper reporter. ask me about it, it's a good story. :)

mandatory kimi reference in my blog:
preshpupp (10:40 PM): hahah what ichyrahchu know bout imatcheroo son?!?
ADULT SUPERVISORY WARNING: those under 18 should not read the following blog for fear of poisoning your mind with thoughts of naughty things. unless you're under 18 and you've already had sex, at which point it would be alright to continue. oops, i probably should not have even written the word "sex." oops i did it again. i played with your heart. got lost in the game. dah! must concentrate and not be distracted with pithy britney spears lyrics. anyways, the following blog may be unhealthy for those with a heart condition, pregnant women, young children, stanfurd students, girls who work at bebe, and christians. except for christians who have sex, and even then, maybe only a handful.
so in keeping with the theme that i opened this blogging nonsense with back in february (namely the question of where to find guys), i'll throw out this new question: where does one have sex in berkeley?
seems like a fairly straightforward and easily answerable question, yet upon closer inspection, it warrants some deep thought. so, move closer to your sceen and inspect it further. yes that's good. now move back to original position. (i think i'm being clever right now, and I AM!!! I INVENTED THE KEYBOARD NECKTIE!!!)
this is what i mean: most people at cal share rooms with others. it is rare for anyone to have their own room. so where do people have sex? of course, there is the coordinating of nights/days/nights and days with one's roommate, which works fine. but what about a random instance of wanting to have AND being in a position of being ABLE to have unplanned sex? what if roommate is already sleeping? what do you do?? where do you go? what becomes of you?
i'll have to do some more investigations, polls, focus groups, and, of course, field work on this topic. please do NOT contact me if you want to help me with this study. i will contact YOU.

so there's this guy who i think about every now and then when i'm strolling around campus. i'll be in a pissy mood or eager to get home or to class or just sort of zoning out on the world, and i'll hear the words he said to me once a few years ago. i must have been a little down, or unhappy with Cal, as i often was during my first two years, and he said: "you know, lisa, you really need to just stop and appreciate how beautiful all THIS is -- the sky, the trees, the grass. it's awesome. you don't see all of it because you've seen it so many times before and you've taken it for granted. but stop and consider how beautiful your surroundings are every now and then. it will make you happy, make you glad to be ALIVE." and it's so true; it's so simple to do, and it's all so beautiful. but at the time, i was skeptical. so he said: "you know what? one night i'll take you around campus and i'll show you what i mean -- the sky, and the stars, and all of it." it was a sweet gesture, totally honest and sincere, one of the few i've ever witnessed in a man. unfortunately, we both forgot about it, and over time, drifted apart. perhaps i'll give him a ring and remind him before i graduate. or maybe i'll just treasure the way he made the scenery, often ignored, dull and indistinct, come alive. either way, i really appreciate any person who can teach me to look at something in a different light. and if he's reading this now...thanks.

did anyone else get suckered into this imatcheroo.com stuff? i got an email from them a few days ago saying that someone had entered my email on the site and i should take a personality test to see if i'm compatible with them. and the email assured me that they don't do mass emails, and that someone had actually entered my email. so i took the test. it was so lame, trust me. but look what i got in the mail today...
iMatcheroo's Connectrix System has matched you with a a Dark brown-hair, Blue-eyed, college student that is currently attending University of California, Berkeley.
if anyone has done this imatcheroo stuff, let me know what this madness is.

JT Snow awaits you. -- email from kimi
you know how absurd it is how much sugar i eat daily? it is really crazy. i have become a junk food fiend. and wouldn't you know, it was MY MOM who pointed it out and subsequently lectured me on it. it all started because of soda. i told her i wouldn't mind it if she bought me some soda for my weekly ration of food (i know i'm a brat), and also some sour cream and onion chips, and maybe some of those cookies too. oh and i'm running out of ice cream and also hot chocolate. thaaanks mom...
it was then that she said "SODA? what's with you and soda? you never drank soda before." besides realizing the extent to which my mom really doesn't know anything about me (and my two coke minimum), i also realized she was right. i do have a serious junk food problem. i blame it mostly on my mom, who gives me copious amounts of it. i shot back at her that at least i'm drinking soda, cuz hey, it could be beer instead. it could be the six shots i took on saturday night for kimi's birthday (including three tequila shots in a row). it could be multiple $2 cosmos. it could be the incredible amount of beer i consumed two fridays ago before and during the del show on lower sproul. soda should really be the least of my mom's concerns.
but maybe i turn to junk food as solace when i can't/shouldn't have alcohol. and maybe i should be unabashed by my junk food dependency--i mean, i think aaron said it best on saturday when he said "why change a horse midstream?" but maybe you have to be drunk to understand that logic.

holla at a playa
i don't know what it was about this week. maybe it was the weather (a drastic change from rain to sun), or my lack of assignments due, or my new fanaticism for working out (three times this week!), or maybe it was the inordinate amount of time i spend chatting with kimi online. whatever it was, it definitely made this the week for HOLLAing. that is, hormones were elevated this week. it was the week for checkin dudes out on campus and thinking about guys to get at in different area codes in the future. in kimi's words, "we've outgrown the 415." yes, we are pimpin nationwide now.
on a not unrelated note, i got an internship in DC for the summer. yay!

it was so weird--my sister asked me which of the guys in "better luck tomorrow" did i think was cute, and right away my mom goes "parry shen? that parry shen guy?" it was a little weird that my mom knows him. laurie groans and goes, "mooom, he's like 29, no 39, and he's an acting teacher," as if that automatically made him un-jockable.
personally, john cho was hot like whoa in that movie and i'd do him ANY DAY (samson: "whatever, he doesn't have glasses"). i know he's the MILF guy; there was just something really sexy about him. the other dudes weren't that bad either. they each had their own thang goin for them. all i could think throughout the movie was that dude han was SO korean, especially when he took off his belt to beat his cousin with it. i think there will be a new wave of asian american male fetishes after this film. maybe?
i was walking home from class today to eat some ice cream, and this black woman in a car had "respect" by aretha franklin blaring with the windows down, and she was singing along at the top of her lungs and clapping with it. totally made my day. too bad my ice cream was melted when i got home. i'm having problems with my fridge--it's like there is no in-between temperature. everything in it becomes totally frozen if it's turned up; but if it's turned down, everything is melted or defrosted. ijuswanna eat some ice cream.
turn it up; turn it down
"jerk it out," the caesars (i saw them with soundtrack of our lives last week, and they were really good! they lead singer is mad cute, and he was looking at me, i swear. i kept looking at him and thinking, "GREEK" [as in greek god, not as in fraternities]. you'll see what i mean when they play the video on MTV.)
"seed 2.0," the roots (this song is DIRRTAY if you listen to the lyrics, but damn even i can get my shoulders movin' to this. i'd name my daughter rock n roll.)
anything by idlewild, death cab for cutie, and cat power (besides my first two sexual frustration songs, it's a mellow sort of week, with the rain and all)

from the sfgate morning fix newsletter, which you should all be subscribed to:
A Bass Player Is A Lonely Hunter
Incubus is parting ways with its bass player, Dirk Lance, with the rockers citing "creative differences," which usually means the bassist wanted to get even more stoned during rehearsal but everyone else was already plenty stoned so the bassist just sat there all grumpy and refused to play and everyone was all like, whatever, dude if you can't hang, like, maybe you should go do a solo album or play in Celine Dion's backing band in Vegas, bitch, which set the bassist like, off, given how most bass players are totally nuts to begin with and who deeply believe no one can understand their deep and profound pain, or whatever. "We, as a band, would love to express our gratitude towards Dirk for an amazing 12 years of artistry and dedication," said singer Brandon Boyd, his hella cute ringlet curls glistening like god's own candy. "Now who wants to bring me twelve nubile porn star virgins, some premium olive oil, and a large snake?" he did not add, tenderly.
